Sichuan Pixian chilli bean paste - doubanjiang - is an intensely spicy blend of chillies, and preserved broad beans. This Pixian broad bean paste is from Pixian in China's Sichuan province, famed for its chilli bean pastes. It's also known simply as fermented broad bean paste or Sichuan chilli paste.

Used in Western China’s traditionally spicy dishes such as mapo tofu or fish fragrant aubergines, this ingredient embodies the characteristic Mala numbing and tingling spice from this region.
